EASTERN EUROPEAN CINEMA IN THE COMMUNIST

EASTERN EUROPEAN CINEMA IN THE COMMUNIST ERA
SS 314

Films can help us understand the complicated history of Communist Eastern Europe. These five films have distinct story lines, and provide a rare, inside look into a politically closed and oppressed world. They cover the struggle between Communists and Nationalists in immediate postwar Poland (“Ashes and Diamonds,” 1961); a coming of age story of a railway apprentice in Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia (“Knife in the Water,” Roman Polanski’s first feature film. This is a change from the movie listed in the printed catalog. The reason for the change is that the course is aimed at showing daily life during the Communist period. The Czech film dealt with Czechoslovakia during the Nazi occupation.); a biting satire on Communist bureaucracy (“Firemen’s Ball,” 1967); the sad tale of a novice nun in Poland discovering her Jewish heritage (“Ida,” 2013); and a forlorn love story in Stalinist Poland and other venues (“Cold War,” 2018).
