The first lecture, “A New World in the Tropics,” will deal with the encounter between Portuguese and indigenous peoples beginning in the 16th Century. Myths about cannibalism and noble savages as well as the impact of colonial Brazil on the world economy will be discussed. The second lecture, “Brazil in the 19th and 20th Centuries” will focus on industrialization and the struggle for democracy and justice. It will include a preliminary analysis of the contemporary situation.

Presenter: Steven Topik, PhD.,
is a Professor of History at UCI. Steven teaches the history of Brazil and the world history of coffee. He spent four years in Brazil doing research and teaching and has lectured on five continents.
