ART ON THE BRAIN
ART ON THE BRAIN
SS 309
Format B/C
The neuroscience behind creativity has puzzled researchers for decades. Recent evidence suggests that creative arts activities may benefit brain function, potentially reducing risk of cognitive decline and dementia. Yet there is still much to learn about how and why these benefits may occur. This interdisciplinary class will introduce research between art and brain function. We will discuss topics such as: neuroplasticity (including the “use it or lose it” hypothesis); how the human brain evolved to favor novelty and exploration; how definitions of art have changed throughout art history (and why that matters for brain health); and the effectiveness of current arts programming.
