Neuropathy – also called peripheral neuropathy – is a condition affecting the normal activity of nerves connecting the central nervous system – the brain and spinal cord – to the body. Neuropathy can affect sensory ability, motor skills and more.
Older people are at increased risk with 25% to 30% of Americans affected. Neuropathy occurs in 60% to 70% of people with diabetes.
Common symptoms include: Tingling, numbness (especially hands and feet), pain, burning or the inability to feel pain, pressure, temperature, or touch. Other symptoms include muscle weakness, loss of motor control, difficulty walking, cramps and falling.
