ENVIRONMENT, CULTURE AND DISEASE: Insights in Medical Anthropology
SC 216

How does society, culture, politics and the economy shape disease experiences and outcomes? To examine this question, this course juxtaposes two cases: kidney failure in Egypt and breast cancer genetics in the United States. The social stratification of health, bioethics and cross-cultural approaches to illness will be explored through the use of a graphic novel written by the class presenter and titled, Lissa: A Story about Medical Promise, Friendship and Revolution.

Presenter: Dr. Sherine Hamdy,
UCI Anthropology Associate Professor, studies medical anthropology and is the co-author of Lissa. (see lissagraphinovel.com)
