This course examines techniques for balancing risk against benefits and their use in fields ranging from medicine to investments.

September 26 - A History Channel episode, “Professor Blackjack,” the story of how MIT’s Edward Thorp, later a UCI professor, beat Vegas.
October 3 – The history of risk prior to the 20th Century.
October 10 – Modern philosophy and mathematics of uncertainty, risk and probability.
October 17 – 20th century decision theory – Mathematics for making risky choices.
October 24 – Risk on Wall Street – how risk is managed (or not!).

Presenter: Howard Mirowitz, MBA,
Wharton School, University Pennsylvania, manages a private venture fund, teaches at UCI’s Merage School of Business.
