THE ROMANCE OF CALIFORNIA SCENE PAINTING

THE ROMANCE OF CALIFORNIA SCENE PAINTING
Stories of Everyday Life
AH 116

Blue-collar workers on a break, clotheslines strung with garments, and scenes of seaside amusement parks depict quotidian life portrayed by the California Scene painters from the 1930s through the late 1970s. Infused with the natural beauty of the West Coast and the idyllic California dream, these paintings often stand in direct juxtaposition to the realities and difficulties of depression-era living. This beautifully illustrated presentation will discuss classically trained painters such as Rex Brandt, Millard Sheets, and Emil Kosa, Jr., and explain the evolution of California representational painting after 1930. Mr. Hilbert will also talk about the close connection with the Hollywood studios where many of these renowned artists were working their day jobs.

Presenter: Mark Hilbert
is a native Californian who, along with his wife Jan, began collecting California Scene painting 25 years ago. Their collection grew to more than 1,000 total lithographs, watercolors and oil paintings. They are donating more than 200 works to the Hilbert Museum of California Art at Chapman University, along with the funding to build a research library and museum to house this impressive collection.
