THE POST-PANDEMIC STATE OF THE ECONOMY AND FEDERAL RESERVE POLICY
SS 313 THE POST-PANDEMIC STATE OF THE ECONOMY AND FEDERAL RESERVE POLICY
Format B/C
Following the most intensive period of the COVID panic, the
U.S. and other industrialized countries are experiencing a surge in inflation. Popular accounts link inflation to pandemic-related supply chain interruptions, COVID stimulus programs, loose monetary policy, and high gas/energy prices. In response, the Federal Reserve and other central banks have been tightening monetary policy to avoid a repeat of 1970s-era inflation. This course will discuss recent theories and evidence on the causes of inflation and examine the role of current economic policy in creating and fighting inflation.
Presenter: William Branch is a Professor of Economics at UC Irvine, and Chairman of the Department of Economics. He specializes in the role of expectations and predictions in inflation and stock markets.
