WHAT IS CRITICAL THEORY?
SS 308 WHAT IS CRITICAL THEORY?
Format B/C
Critical Theory has been widely discussed in the news recently and
has been blamed for many societal ills. It has been targeted by conservative media in association with Critical Race Theory. But what is Critical Theory? This lecture will approach this question from its foundational roots in the Frankfurt School in the early 20th century, partly in response to the development of fascism in Germany. We will touch on how it is different from Critical Race Theory but was also key to its development. We will explore why Critical Theory is important and relevant for us today.
Presenter: Benjamin Joseph Brisson is a Ph.D. candidate in Political Science at UC Irvine, specializing in the subfield of Political Theory, with an emphasis on Critical Theory.
