ADVENTURES IN ECMO

ADVENTURES IN ECMO
SC 211
Format B

ECMO became newsworthy with the COVID-19 pandemic. Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is a life support system designed around a sophisticated pump and artificial membrane lung. It is deployed when ventilator support alone is no longer viable in cases of respiratory insufficiency. The bypass system is attached to the patient’s blood stream by catheters as in hemodialysis, but the membrane lung allows continuous support for days and weeks if necessary.
