EVOLUTION OF THEATER AND CONCERT HALL DESIGN
From the Greeks to Contemporary World-Class Venues
AH 108

The first session of this course will examine the design, construction techniques and stage technology of great theaters from the Epidaurus of ancient Greece to the magnificent theaters of the Italian and English Renaissance and the 19th century Bayreuth Festspielhaus. The review will also include such contemporary venues as the Walt Disney Concert Hall and the Soka Performing Arts Center, both designed by the world-renowned acoustician Yasuhisa Toyota. In the second session, David Palmer will lead a backstage tour of the Soka Performing Arts Center, focusing on its amazing acoustical design and aesthetics. A free concert, designed to demonstrate these acoustics, will follow.

NOTE: This class will be limited to 40 registered participants. Walk-ins are encouraged for the first session at the Irvine Station, but the tour at Soka will be strictly limited to registrants. This is a repeat of the course offered in Spring 2017.

Presenter: David Palmer
has been General Manager of the Soka Performing Arts Center since it opened in 2011. For the preceding 17 years, he was manager of the Ruth B. Shannon Center for the Performing Arts. Palmer holds BFA and MA degrees in stage lighting and has been designing professionally since 1976.
