Thursday, October 5: Early 20th Century Philosophy
We will explore early 20th century European philosophy, which shares a common suspicion of traditional rationalism and metaphysical speculation. We will discover Frege, Bergson, Husserl, Heidegger, Carnap, Merleau-Ponty, Sartre, and Wittgenstein and the ways each strived to develop novel ways of thinking.

Presenter: Georges Van Abeele, Ph.D.,
is Dean of the UCI School of Humanities and Professor of Comparative Literature and English.

Thursday, October 12: Early 20th Century European Modern Art
The focus of this lecture is the search for art that breaks with the past, expressing artistic freedom and utilizing new forms and materials.

Presenter: Jackie Powell,
is a favorite, long-time OLLI presenter of art subjects, Jackie taught Art History in community colleges and has presented several art lectures at Bowers Museum and other local cultural centers.

Thursday, October 26: Early 20th Century Literature
This class is an exploration of modernism as a distinct aesthetic response to 19th century realism. This includes the poetic revolution of Dada and surrealism, and the theatre of the absurd.

Thursday, November 2: Music in Early 20th Century: Agony or Ecstasy?
We’ll explore dissonance and atonality vs. melodic harmonies of composers, ranging from Schoenberg, Shostakovich and Bartok to Poulenc, Varese, Milhaud and Benjamin Britten. Is this music agony or ecstasy to your ears and soul?

Presenter/Developer: Meredith Cheston,
is a long-time developer of courses in Arts and Humanities, and an OLLI presenter of topics related to music.
