Mrs. Packard tells the story of a great American woman’s struggle to right a system gone wrong. On the morning of June 18, 1860, Reverend Theophilus Packard had his wife, Elizabeth, removed against her will from their home and committed to the state-run insane asylum for her liberal beliefs. Elizabeth remains true to her principles in the face of intense hardship. The play cuts back and forth from her time in the asylum and the trial she fought for that eventually set her free.
Presenter: Melissa Livingston, Graduate Directing Candidate. Melissa is a third year MFA Directing Candidate at UCI and holds a BA in Theatre from St. Edward’s University. Since arriving at UCI she has served as Assistant Director at South Coast Repertory and Utah Shakespeare Festival. She has been honored with numerous awards.
