Discover the historical context and beauty of Art Nouveau (1880-1915) and Art Deco (1915-1939). The three-lecture series will include dynamic architecture, glass, ceramics, exquisite jewelry and innovative fine and graphic arts.

Wednesday, September 27: Introduction to Art Nouveau
This lecture will explore the inspirations of Art Nouveau which include nature, Japanese and Islamic art, and innovative glimpses of the past, including ancient Egyptian, Byzantine and Rococo art. The architecture of Antoni Gaudi and Victor Horta will be discussed.

Wednesday, October 4: The Blossoming of Art Nouveau
The art of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Margaret Mac Donald Mackintosh, Alfons Mucha, and Gustav Klimt will be featured.

Wednesday, October 11: Introduction to Art Deco
Deco is the direct successor to Art Nouveau, but in contrast, it was influenced by Cubism and stressed simple, massive forms. Tamara de Lempicka will be featured as an example of an Art Deco artist.
