TALES OF A PRISON PSYCHIATRIST
TALES OF A PRISON PSYCHIATRIST
SS 308
Mentally ill and addicted people currently overwhelm our streets and prisons. The full story of how this issue evolved is quite complex. Dr. Edward Kaufman has seen the problem develop over the past five decades. He will describe the evolution through multiple systems including courts, legislation, state hospitals, mental health centers, jails, therapeutic communities, and homeless shelters. His story is not a dry academic tale but the human stories of mentally ill and addicted patients and inmates alongside those of judges and mental health professionals.
He will present workable evidence-based prevention and treatment programs as alternatives to incarceration, plus case histories of those who have benefitted from such programs.
Presenter: Dr. Ed Kaufman,
who has been involved in resisting the changes that led to mass incarceration of the mentally ill and addicted in the United States since his psychiatric residency in 1961. Today, he works in promoting successful community alternatives to incarceration.
