CHINA TODAY: WHAT IS THE “CHINA DREAM” ABOUT AND WHAT DRIVES IT?

China, an authoritarian state, is led by Xi Jinping, the Communist Party’s strongman who came up with the idea of the “China Dream.” This refers to the goal of restoring China’s ancient glory and power. But Xi is also expanding state control over the society in unprecedented ways. What drives his behavior and how has society reacted to the ruling Party’s policies?
Presenter: Professor Dorothy J. Solinger
retired from the UCI Department of Political Science after teaching for thirty years. Her Ph.D. is from Stanford. She has authored six books and edited another seven. Her research over the past three decades has focused on internal migration and urban poverty in China.
