THE CURRENT CONTROVERSIES OVER FAKE AND REAL NEWS SS 311 Charges of “fake news” seem commonplace these days. What is “fake news?” What is “real news?” How does one differentiate between them? We will discuss three major questions: the different models of news reporting in democratic and authoritarian political regimes; the changing perceptions of news and journalism and the current research on how Americans are getting information about current events, including social media; and the role of the media in recent elections and its implications for our democracy. Presenter: Nadine S. Koch-Steinberg is an Emeritus Professor of Political Science, California State University, Los Angeles. For 30 years she has taught courses on Politics and the Media, Public Opinion, Political Parties, Campaigns and Elections. Developer: Thomas P.
