THE JOY OF OPERA

THE JOY OF OPERA
AH 114

So much goes into making the unique total art form called Opera. This ongoing course highlights many themes which can be taken from Opera. We explore tenors, the life and work of Puccini and the role of diseases in opera, all with extensive DVD excerpts. As always, the aims are enlightenment, education and above all, enjoyment.

Thursday, May 10: It’s Tenor Time
Who are the greatest tenors of all time? We look at the top ten, and study the top three in depth.

Thursday, May 17: The Passion and Power of Puccini
The last of the great Italian opera composers died almost a century ago. We learn of the life and work of the genius who gave us La Boheme, Madama Butterfly, Tosca and more.

Thursday, May 24: Maladies and Melodies
In opera, expect love and desire, suffering and loss, disease and death. We explore the changing depiction of disease in opera.

Presenter: Dennis Glauber M.D.
