DERIVATIVES, GLOBAL FINANCE, AND CRISIS

DERIVATIVES, GLOBAL FINANCE, AND CRISIS
SS 306

How did financial markets get so big and so crisis-prone with so little regulation? What are derivatives and what role did they play in the financial crisis of 2008-2009? What has changed since then? We will examine the role of complex, opaque financial products in the global financial system.

There will be three lectures covering the lead-up to the global financial crisis; how derivatives magnified the collapse of the US residential mortgage market; the difficulty of effectively regulating financial markets even in the aftermath of crisis.
