BOB DYLAN AND HIS POETRY
AH 111

Bob Dylan was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2016 for, “having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition.” In this course we will look at examples of Dylan's work, and explore how he uses both literary and musical techniques to reveal his attitudes and judgments about his themes. The class will review lyric sheets and recordings of selected songs, as well as live performances by the presenter.

Wednesday, April 4: Introduction to Dylan, and summary of major influences and themes in his body of work.
Wednesday, April 18: Theme - Injustice, hypocrisy and the problem of evil. (Note different time slot for this session.)
Wednesday, April 25: Theme - The creative individual in love.
Wednesday, May 2: Theme - The creative individual in society.

Presenter: Howard Mirowitz, a frequent OLLI presenter, pursues an active retirement through volunteer service with several Orange County organizations, including UC Irvine Applied Innovation; he also manages a seed venture capital fund. In addition to teaching in the MBA program at UC Irvine’s Paul Merage School of Business, he is a long-time student of Bob Dylan, and has published articles in Dylan-related fanzines such as Isis. He received his BA from Dartmouth College and his MBA from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business.
