EXPLORING MARS:
EXPLORING MARS:
NASA’S InSight Lander Mission
SC 215
NASA’s InSight (Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Heat Transport) Mission is dedicated to studying the interior structure and composition of Mars. InSight launched in May 2018 for its 6-month voyage to Mars’ Elysium Planitia on November 26, 2018.
The program will measure Mars’ "vital signs": its "pulse" (seismology), "temperature" (heat flow), and "reflexes" (precision tracking). Studying Mars' interior will help us to answer key questions about the early formation of rocky planets in our inner solar system — Mercury, Venus, and our own Earth. Understanding planet formation will help guide our search for life beyond Earth. InSight also studies tectonic activity and meteorite impacts on Mars today.
