LIVING WELL: DIABETES SCIENCE AND RESEARCH:
Prevention, Treatment, and Consequences
SC 213

Diabetes is a metabolic condition where insulin generated by the pancreas is not useful at the cellular level (Type 2 insulin resistance) or the pancreas does not produce enough insulin as a consequence of an autoimmune condition (Type 1). Proper regulation and usage of insulin by our cells to metabolize blood sugar is crucial for health. This class is intended to educate us about the advances being made in research at UCI and elsewhere that start at the cellular level, including stem cell research.

Presenter: Associate Professor Steven Chessler M.D., Ph.D., UCI Diabetes Research Center. Dr. Chessler conducts research into the molecular biology of diabetes which advances the development of treatment and cures.
