WALKING THE DESERT: New Photographic Explorations

WALKING THE DESERT:
NEW PHOTOGRAPHIC EXPLORATIONS
AH 114

For over two hundred years, the Frontier, the Wild West had been the defining hope and dream of America. The West was a place of redemption, a site to start anew, and a territory of promises to be redeemed. Starting in the 1980s, a trio of American photographers, Richard Misrach, John Phafl, and Peter Goin, began their explorations of the contemporary deserts. This course discusses what these photographers discovered. What is the modern fate of the American dream of renewal on the edge of the Last Frontier?
