YOU CAN’T BE ANY POORER THAN DEAD
The Humor of Flannery O’Conner
AH 105

Flannery O’Conner is described as a writer of “Christian Realism” in the “genre” of “Southern Gothic”. In the 50 years since her death, these attributions have crystallized. But readers today are most impressed with her wicked sense of humor which she uses as a sharp tool of social criticism. This class will discuss three stories, “Good Country People,” “A Good Man is Hard to Find”, and “Everything that Rises Must Converge”, each one a gem of insight into racism, hypocrisy, violence and human weakness.
