PUTTING PEN TO PAPER
PUTTING PEN TO PAPER
The Intricacies of Writing a Memoir
AH 101
Many of us have led lives that others consider fascinating. Yet how do you convey this on paper? Will your memoir be written in novelistic style, with a plot that continues from beginning to end, or will it be episodic, revealing special occasions in your life that stand out in memory? In this class, you will not only be thoroughly entertained, but you will also be the beneficiary of extraordinary nuggets of wisdom on how to write a memoir, or even a novel if you want to go that far. Among the topics: The all-important Beginning, How to Define Your Story, What to Include and What to Leave Out, How to Handle Your Villains, and How True is True?
Presenter: Maralys Wills has authored 17 books which have earned several national awards and span many genres and publishers. She studied at Stanford and UCLA, earning a B.A. and a teaching credential. For the past 31 years, Wills has taught college novel writing, and in 2000 was voted “Teacher of the Year.” In addition to frequent speaking engagements, she has given numerous writing seminars---at UCLA, UC Riverside, UCI, Orange Coast College, Cerritos College, and at dozens of writers’ conferences.
