Course Description
The course will discuss ways in which vibration may affect optical performance, as well as methods and means of reducing this impact. Principal methods of vibration control, such as damping and isolation will be discussed using mathematical models and real life examples. Vibration measurements and environmental standards will be presented as applicable to optomechanical systems. State-of-the art vibration control systems will be reviewed, including pneumatic and elastomeric isolators, damping treatments and active control systems.
Prerequisite: Introductory College level Mathematics and Physics including basic calculus, complex variables and Mechanics.
Instructor
Vyacheslav M. "Slava" Ryaboy, Ph.D., Doctor of Sciences, is the Chief Mechanical Engineer in Vibration Control R&D at MKS Light & Motion Division (formerly Newport Corporation) of Irvine, CA. Previously, he held research and teaching positions in the areas of Applied Mechanics and Mechanical Engineering, including senior research positions at the EG&G Washington Analytical Services Center and Mechanical Engineering Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, adjunct professorship at the Bauman Technical University in Moscow, Russia, and visiting appointments at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden, and Technion in Haifa, Israel. He is the author of a monograph on optimal vibration isolation as well as numerous papers and inventions in the field of Vibration Control. He holds Ph.D. and Doctor of Sciences degrees from the Lomonosov Moscow State University in Mechanics of Solids and System Dynamics, respectively.
