The Role of Culture in Language Teaching
This course explores how our communication style is an expression of our cultural values and perceptions. Ways in which cultural expectations and personal assumptions can lead to misunderstandings will be examined, as well as how such misunderstandings can be avoided or successfully addressed. Topics of discussion include: the role of culture in the classroom, intercultural communicative competence, responsibilities of the intercultural educator, how to meet the needs of a diverse student population, and the values, beliefs and behavioral norms in the U.S. and other societies.
