Gain an understanding of the characteristics of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and the implications for children’s learning, behavior and ability to process information. Three primary areas of impairment are examined (communication, socialization and restricted patterns of behavior), along with emotional regulation and sensorimotor differences that may impact children’s academic, social, self-help and play skills. Explore the latest research on potential causes, best practices for assessment and intervention, as well as current legal and ethical issues related to autism services. Other topics include parent-professional collaboration and transition planning from infancy through adulthood.
This is not a self-paced course. Students will progress through the course together. Lessons will be posted one week at a time. The previous week's lesson will remain available for the duration of the course. Students who enroll after the start date of the course will have to contact the instructor regarding missed lessons.
This course meets the qualifications for 30 hours of continuing education for MFTs, LPCCs and/or LCSWs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences. UC Davis Extension provider number PCE577.
